How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, but a common starting dose for high blood pressure is 80 mg once daily. For other conditions like heart attack or heart failure, the starting dose might be lower and gradually increased.

Method

Take Diovan with or without food, swallowed whole with a glass of water. Try to take it at about the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 320 mg, but your doctor will adjust it based on your specific needs.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure, which might make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up
  • Worsening kidney function (a sign of kidney problems)
RARE
  • Sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema)
  • Sudden fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular heartbeat due to high potassium levels
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, swollen feet or legs (signs of heart failure)
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Diarrhea
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in the intestines with stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to valsartan or any other ingredient in Diovan.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it can harm your baby.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine containing aliskiren.

  • If you get sudden swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema), stop taking Diovan right away and get medical help.
  • Diovan can cause dizziness and affect your ability to concentrate, so be careful when driving or operating machinery.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
