How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. It's usually 80 mg once a day for high blood pressure, or 20-40 mg twice a day for heart issues. Doses can change based on your needs.

Method

Take Diovan with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Try to take it at the same time every day.

Important

The highest daily dose is usually 320 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure (may cause dizziness or fainting when standing up)
  • Worsened kidney function
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat)
  • Sudden fainting
  • Feeling of spinning (vertigo)
  • Serious kidney problems
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Trouble breathing when lying down
  • Swelling in feet or legs
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Stomach ache
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Loose stools (diarrhea)
  • Feeling very tired
  • Feeling weak
  • Swelling in your gut (stomach pain, feeling sick, throwing up, diarrhea)
  • Skin rash with blisters
  • Skin reactions (rash, itching, hives, fever, joint/muscle pain, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms)
  • Small purple spots on skin, fever, itching
  • Easy bleeding or bruising (due to low blood cells)
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth sores (due to low white blood cell count)
  • Low red blood cells (anemia, causing tiredness)
  • High potassium in blood (muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat)
  • Liver issues (yellow skin/eyes, abnormal liver tests)
  • Kidney issues (abnormal kidney tests)
  • Low salt in blood (tiredness, confusion, muscle twitches, fits)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Diovan if you are allergic to valsartan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Diovan if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take Diovan if you are more than 3 months pregnant, or if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking aliskiren.
  • If you get swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or have trouble breathing, stop Diovan right away and get medical help. This is a serious allergic reaction.
  • Diovan is not suggested if you are pregnant (especially after the first 3 months) or breastfeeding because it could harm your baby.

  • This medicine can make you dizzy and affect your focus. Be careful when driving or using machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
