Dimetylfumarat Avansor is a medicine used to treat relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients aged 13 and older by preventing the body's immune system from damaging the brain and spinal cord.

How to Use

Dosage

Start with 120 mg twice a day for the first 7 days, then take the usual dose of 240 mg twice a day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water. Do not crush, chew, dissolve, or suck on them. Take with food to help reduce common side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Flushing (redness, warmth, burning, or itching sensation on the body)
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain or cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis)
  • Skin itching
  • Rash
  • Pink or red spots on the skin (erythema)
  • Hair loss
  • Low white blood cell count (lymphopenia, leukopenia)
  • Protein in urine (albuminuria)
  • Increased liver enzymes (ALAT, ASAT)
  • Stomach and intestinal inflammation (gastroenteritis)
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Painful menstruation
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Low platelet count
  • Liver inflammation and increased liver enzymes with bilirubin
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, skin pain, fever, weakness, numbness, or runny nose.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or are suspected of having a rare brain infection called PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cell count, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will check these with blood tests before and during treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, stomach or bowel disease, or a serious infection (e.g., pneumonia).
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) can occur. Tell your doctor right away if you think you have shingles symptoms.

  • If your MS seems to be getting worse or you notice new symptoms like weakness, vision changes, confusion, or memory problems, talk to your doctor immediately as these could be signs of a serious brain infection (PML).
  • If you have increased urination, thirst, muscle weakness, or bone pain/fractures, talk to your doctor, as these could be signs of a rare kidney disorder (Fanconi syndrome).
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 13 years old.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks (over 30% alcohol by volume) for one hour before and after taking this medicine, as it can cause stomach irritation.
