How to Use

Dosage

For the first 7 days, take 120 mg twice a day. After that, the usual dose is 240 mg twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not break, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew them. Take with food to help reduce common side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg (two 240 mg capsules).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Facial redness (flushing), feeling of warmth, heat, burning or itching on the body
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain or cramps
RARE
  • Inflammation in the stomach and intestines
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining
  • Burning sensation
  • Hot flashes, feeling of heat
  • Itchy skin
  • Rash
  • Pink or red patches on the skin
  • Hair loss
  • Low white blood cell count (lymphopenia, leukopenia), which means your body may be less able to fight infections.
  • Protein (albumin) in urine
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood (ALAT, ASAT)
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Decreased platelets
  • Liver inflammation and increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT or ASAT) along with bilirubin
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection), with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, or pain on the skin, often on one side of the body or face.
  • Severe, watery runny nose

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are suspected of having a rare brain infection called PML, or if you have confirmed PML.
  • Your doctor will check your blood, kidney, and liver regularly before and during treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver disease, stomach or bowel disease, or a serious infection like pneumonia.
  • If you think you have shingles (herpes zoster), tell your doctor right away.

  • If your MS symptoms get worse, or you notice new symptoms like weakness, changes in vision, clumsiness, confusion, or personality changes, tell your doctor immediately. These could be signs of a rare, serious brain infection (PML).
  • Tell your doctor right away if you urinate more often, are thirstier, drink more than usual, feel muscle weakness, break a bone, or have aches and pains. These could be signs of a rare kidney problem (Fanconi syndrome).
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 10 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines, especially those for psoriasis (like fumarates), medicines affecting your immune system, or medicines that affect your kidneys (like some antibiotics, diuretics, certain pain relievers, and lithium). Avoid live vaccines while taking this medicine.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks (over 30% alcohol by volume) for one hour before and after taking this medicine, as it can cause stomach irritation.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • If you experience swelling of the face, lips, mouth or tongue, wheezing or trouble breathing, dizziness, or fainting, stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away, as this could be a severe allergic reaction.
