How to Use

Dosage

Start with 120 mg twice a day for the first 7 days, then take the usual dose of 240 mg twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not break, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew the capsule. Take this medicine with food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg, taken as 240 mg twice daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Flushing, feeling warm or hot, burning or itching skin, rash, reddish patches on skin.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or cramps, indigestion, inflammation of stomach lining or intestines.
  • Hair loss.
  • Low white blood cell count (visible in blood tests), protein in urine, increased liver enzymes (visible in blood tests).
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (may be severe, including swelling of face, lips, mouth, tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or loss of consciousness).
  • Low platelet count.
  • Liver inflammation and elevated liver enzyme levels with bilirubin.
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection), with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, or pain on one side of the body or face.
  • Severe, watery runny nose.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or are suspected to have a rare brain infection called PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy).
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have severe kidney or liver disease, stomach or bowel problems, or a serious infection like pneumonia.
  • If you notice new or worsening MS symptoms (like weakness or changes in vision), talk to your doctor right away, as these could be signs of a rare brain infection called PML.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, unless your doctor says it is absolutely necessary after discussing it with you.
