How to Use

Dosage

Start with 120 mg twice daily for 7 days, then take 240 mg twice daily.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with water. Do not divide, crush, or chew. Take with food to help reduce side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg (240 mg twice daily).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Flushing, warmth, burning, or itching sensation on the body
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Stomach inflammation
  • Rash or red patches on the skin
  • Hair loss
RARE
  • Swelling of face, lips, mouth, or tongue, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, loss of consciousness (signs of a severe allergic reaction)
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, or pain on one side of the body or face, fever, and weakness
  • Allergic reactions
  • Reduced number of platelets
  • Liver inflammation
  • Runny nose

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have or might have a rare brain infection called PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cell count, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will perform regular blood tests.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have severe kidney or liver disease, stomach or bowel problems, or a serious infection (like pneumonia).
  • This medicine can cause shingles. Tell your doctor right away if you think you have symptoms of shingles.

  • If your MS symptoms worsen or you get new symptoms (like weakness or vision changes), tell your doctor immediately. These could be signs of a rare but serious brain infection (PML).
  • A rare, serious kidney condition (Fanconi syndrome) has been reported. If you urinate more, feel very thirsty, have weak muscles, bone pain, or fractures, tell your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially psoriasis medicines containing fumarates, medicines that affect your immune system, kidney medicines (like some antibiotics, diuretics, pain relievers, lithium), and avoid live vaccines.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks (more than 50 ml or 30% alcohol by volume) for one hour before and after taking this medicine to prevent stomach inflammation.
  • Do not use if pregnant unless clearly necessary and discussed with your doctor. If breastfeeding, your doctor will advise whether to stop treatment or breastfeeding.
