How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is 120 mg twice a day for seven days. After that, the usual dose is 240 mg twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not divide, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew the capsule.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Redness on face or body, feeling warm, burning, or itching.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea.
  • Stomach pain or cramps.
  • Stomach or gut inflammation.
  • Vomiting.
  • Upset stomach.
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining.
  • Stomach or bowel issues.
  • Burning feeling.
  • Hot flashes, feeling hot.
  • Itchy skin.
  • Rash.
  • Red or pink spots on skin.
  • Hair loss.
  • Low white blood cell count.
  • Protein in urine.
  • High liver enzymes in blood.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Low platelet count.
  • Liver inflammation and high liver enzymes (with bilirubin).
  • Shingles (symptoms include blisters, burning, itching, pain, fever, and weakness).
  • Severe runny nose.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not use if you have or are suspected to have a rare brain infection (PML).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cells, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will monitor these with blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney disease, liver disease, stomach or bowel disease, or a serious infection (e.g., pneumonia).
  • If you think you have shingles, tell your doctor right away.

  • If your MS symptoms worsen or you get new symptoms (e.g., weakness or vision changes), talk to your doctor right away, as these could be signs of a PML infection.
  • If you notice you're urinating more, are thirstier, have weak muscles, bone fractures, or pain, talk to your doctor.
  • Avoid certain vaccines (live vaccines) while taking this medicine, as they can increase infection risk.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks (over 30% alcohol by volume) for one hour before and after taking your dose.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, unless you have discussed it with your doctor.
  • Do not use this medicine while breastfeeding.
