How to Use

Dosage

Start with 120 mg twice daily for 7 days. After that, the usual dose is 240 mg twice daily.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with water. Do not crush or chew them. Take the medicine with food to help reduce side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg (240 mg twice daily).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Flushing of the face or body, feeling of warmth, heat, burning, or itching.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea.
  • Stomach pain or cramps.
  • Stomach and bowel inflammation (gastroenteritis).
  • Vomiting.
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia).
  • Stomach lining inflammation (gastritis).
  • Rash.
  • Pink or reddish patches on the skin (erythema).
  • Hair loss (alopecia).
  • Low white blood cell count (lymphopenia, leukopenia). A low white blood cell count can mean your body's ability to fight infections is weaker. If you have a serious infection (e.g., pneumonia), tell your doctor immediately.
  • Protein (albumin) in urine.
  • Increased liver enzymes (ALAT, ASAT) in blood.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity).
  • Decreased platelet count.
  • Liver inflammation and increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT or ASAT together with bilirubin).
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection), with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, or pain on one side of the body or face, along with fever, weakness, numbness, or red patches with severe pain.
  • Severe, watery runny nose (rhinorrhea).
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue (angioedema).
  • Wheezing, difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath (dyspnea, hypoxia).
  • Dizziness or fainting (hypotension).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have or are suspected to have a rare brain infection called PML.
  • This medicine may affect your white blood cells, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will monitor these with regular blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney, liver, or bowel disease, or a serious infection like pneumonia.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you suspect symptoms of shingles.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if your MS worsens or you notice new symptoms like weakness, vision or memory problems, which could be signs of a PML infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you urinate more often, are thirstier, have weak muscles, bone fractures, or pain, as these could be symptoms of a rare kidney disease.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 10 years old.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks (over 30%) for an hour before and after taking the medicine, as it can cause stomach inflammation.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • Do not take a double dose if you miss one. You can take the missed dose if there are at least 4 hours until your next dose.
