How to Use

Dosage

Initially, take 120 mg twice daily for 7 days. After 7 days, the usual dose is 240 mg twice daily.

Method

Take orally. Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not divide, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew them, as this may increase some side effects. Take with food to help reduce common side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Redness or flushing of the face or body, or a feeling of warmth, burning, or itching in the body
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain or cramps
  • Inflammation of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis)
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis)
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Burning sensation
  • Hot flashes, feeling of heat
  • Itching skin
  • Rash
  • Pink or red patches on the skin
  • Hair loss
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Decreased number of platelets

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any of its ingredients, or if you suspect or have confirmed a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cell count, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will perform regular blood tests to check these functions.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, stomach or bowel disease, or a severe infection (e.g., pneumonia).
  • If you think you have shingles (herpes zoster) symptoms, tell your doctor right away.
  • If your MS symptoms worsen or you notice new symptoms (like weakness or vision changes), tell your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of a rare brain infection called PML.
