How to Use

Dosage

Start with 120 mg twice a day for 7 days. After that, the usual dose is 240 mg twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not split, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew them. Take with food to help reduce side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg (two 240 mg capsules).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Flushing, warmth, burning, or itching sensation on the face or body
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain or cramps
  • Stomach flu (gastroenteritis)
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis)
  • Rash
  • Pink or red patches on the skin (erythema)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Liver problems (inflammation)
  • Shingles (herpes zoster), with symptoms like blisters, burning, itching, or pain on the skin, fever, weakness, and numbness
  • Severe, watery runny nose

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have or suspect you have a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cells, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will order regular blood tests to check these.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver disease, stomach or bowel problems, or a serious infection (like pneumonia).
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) can happen. Tell your doctor right away if you think you have shingles.

  • If your MS symptoms get worse or you notice new symptoms like weakness, vision changes, or confusion, contact your doctor immediately. These could be signs of a serious brain infection (PML).
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks for one hour before and after taking this medicine to prevent stomach irritation.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant unless your doctor says it is clearly necessary.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 10 years old.
