How to Use

Dosage

Starting dose is 120 mg twice daily for 7 days, then the usual dose is 240 mg twice daily.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water; do not divide, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew. Take them with food to help reduce common side effects.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 480 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Facial or body redness (flushing), feeling of warmth, heat, burning, or itching in the body
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain or cramps
  • Gastroenteritis (stomach flu)
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Stomach lining inflammation (gastritis)
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Burning sensation
  • Hot flashes, feeling of heat
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Rash
  • Pinkish or reddish patches on the skin (erythema)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Low white blood cell count (lymphopenia, leukopenia)
  • Protein (albumin) in urine
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT, ASAT) in blood
  • Ketones in urine (detected by urine tests)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Decreased platelet count
  • Liver inflammation and increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT or ASAT with bilirubin)
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection), with symptoms like blisters, skin tingling, itching, or pain usually on one side of the upper body or face, along with fever and weakness.
  • Severe, watery runny nose (rhinorrhea)
  • Swelling of face, lips, mouth, or tongue (angioedema)
  • Wheezing, breathing difficulties or shortness of breath (dyspnea, hypoxia)
  • Dizziness or loss of consciousness (hypotension)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or are suspected of having a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
  • This medicine can affect your white blood cells, kidneys, and liver. Your doctor will take regular blood tests during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney disease, liver disease, stomach or bowel disease, or a serious infection (e.g., pneumonia).
  • If you get shingles or suspect symptoms of it, tell your doctor immediately.

  • If your MS worsens or you notice new symptoms, contact your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of a serious brain infection (PML).
  • If you urinate more often, are unusually thirsty, feel weak in your muscles, have bone fractures or pain, talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.
  • Avoid strong alcoholic drinks for one hour before and after taking this medicine, as it can cause stomach inflammation.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 10 years of age.
