How to Use

Dosage

Starting dose is usually 0.75–1.5 mg once or divided into several doses. Alternatively, 0.25–0.75 mg daily for one week. Maintenance dose is usually 0.125–0.25 mg daily. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth exactly as your doctor has instructed. You can take them with or without food, but avoid high-fiber foods when taking this medicine.

Important

Your doctor will determine the correct dose for you. Generally, the maximum maintenance dose is 0.25 mg per day, but starting doses can be higher for a short period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Vision problems (e.g., blurred vision or seeing yellow-green)
  • Heart rhythm problems or changes in ECG
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Allergic skin reactions (such as rash or hives)
RARE
  • Depression
  • Decreased platelet count (may cause bruising and nosebleeds)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Psychosis, apathy, confusion
  • Headache
  • Abnormal heart rate
  • Severe abdominal pain due to weakened blood circulation in the intestines
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Fatigue, general malaise and weakness

Important Warnings

  • You are allergic to digoxin or other similar heart medicines.
  • You have certain types of heart conduction problems, such as heart block or Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
  • You have or have had fast heart rhythms originating from the ventricles (e.g., ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation).
  • Your irregular heartbeat is caused by too much digoxin.
  • You have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Maximun daily dose: 0,125 mg. In older adults, concentration should be less than 1.
