How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. Doses often range from 50 mg to 400 mg, taken once a day, or a single dose of 150 mg for some infections.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. It's best to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 800 mg, depending on the infection. For children, the maximum is 400 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach ache, diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting)
  • Changes in blood test results that show how your liver is working
  • Skin rash
RARE
  • Reduced number of red blood cells (can cause pale skin, weakness, and shortness of breath)
  • Lower number of white blood cells (which help fight infections) or other blood cell changes like low platelets (which help stop bleeding) causing red or purple skin discoloration
  • Decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, feeling sleepy
  • Seizures, spinning sensation, dizziness, tingling, numbness, changes in taste
  • Constipation, indigestion, gas, dry mouth
  • Muscle pain, fatigue, general feeling of being unwell, fever, increased sweating
  • Liver damage or liver failure, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Hives, severe skin reactions like blistering or peeling skin, hair loss
  • Low potassium in blood, changes in blood chemistry (e.g., high cholesterol or fats)
  • Abnormal heart rhythm or changes in heart rate (shown on an EKG)
  • Severe allergic reactions (sometimes serious), including widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, swollen lips or face

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to fluconazole, similar medicines, or any other ingredients. Symptoms can include itching, red skin, or trouble breathing.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney, or heart problems, including irregular heartbeat, or if your potassium, calcium, or magnesium levels are abnormal.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, blisters, peeling skin, or signs of an allergic reaction like swelling of the face or lips.
  • Talk to your doctor before using if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, as it may increase the risk of miscarriage or birth defects.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or seizures, so be careful when driving or using machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor liver values. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with warfarin. (updated 4.12.2023)
