Diafer is an iron medicine used to treat low iron levels if you have kidney disease and are on dialysis, or if you cannot take iron by mouth, helping to replenish your body's iron stores.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your exact dose, which can be up to 200 mg per dose.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Diafer directly into your vein or dialyzer. They will watch you for at least 30 minutes after each dose to check for any reactions.

Important

The maximum dose per single administration is 200 mg. Your doctor will determine your maximum weekly dose, which should not be more than 1000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin reactions at or near the injection site like redness, swelling, burning, pain, bruising, discoloration, leakage, or irritation.
RARE
  • Blurred vision.
  • Numbness.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach or belly pain.
  • Cramps.
  • Allergic reactions (redness, itching, rash, and shortness of breath).
  • Feeling hot (or fever).
  • Tenderness and swelling at the injection site.
  • Changes in taste.
  • Trouble breathing (bronchospasm).
  • Upset stomach.
  • Hives.
  • Back pain.
  • Irregular heartbeats.
  • Chest pain.
  • Fainting.
  • Seizures.
  • Dizziness, restlessness, extreme tiredness.
  • Diarrhea, sweating, shaking.
  • Severe allergic reactions causing swelling of the face and throat.
  • Muscle and joint aches.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Changes in how you think or feel.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Slow heartbeat in the unborn baby.
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat.
  • Changes in red blood cells (seen in blood tests).
  • Headache.
  • Strange skin sensations.
  • Temporary hearing loss.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Sudden severe allergic reactions.
  • Skin discoloration.
  • Flu-like sickness (with fever, muscle, and joint pain) a few hours to several days after the injection.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Diafer if you have anemia not caused by low iron (like hemolytic anemia), too much iron in your body, an active liver disease, or if you are allergic to Diafer or other injectable iron medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had drug allergies, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, severe asthma, eczema, other allergies, or a current blood infection.
  • Get medical help right away if you get severe allergic reactions like swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, trouble swallowing or breathing, hives, or chest pain.
