For full-body treatment (like shock), typically 25 mg (1 ml) is given into a vein. For local treatment (like a joint), typically 12.5-25 mg (0.5-1 ml) is given per injection.

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a vein, muscle, under the skin, or directly into a joint. It can also be added to an intravenous drip or given as a rectal enema.

Important

For full-body treatment, the maximum daily dose is typically 75 mg (3 ml), given up to 3 times a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Your body might hold onto too much water and salt, causing swelling, and you might lose too much potassium. You could get headaches or high blood pressure.
  • Children might grow slower. Your body's hormone balance can change, affecting blood sugar (making diabetes worse or causing new diabetes) and giving you Cushing-like symptoms (like a round face or weight gain around your middle).
  • You could get stomach or gut ulcers, bleeding in your digestive system, or a swollen belly.
  • Your skin might become thin, bruise easily, get red spots or larger bruises, or become red on your face. You might also get acne, grow more body hair, heal slower, or sweat more.
  • Your body's ability to fight infections might be weaker, and vaccines might not work as well.
  • Your muscles might become weak or waste away, and your bones might become brittle (osteoporosis) or even die (aseptic necrosis).
  • You might have mood swings (like feeling very happy or having psychosis), seizures, or increased pressure in your head.
  • You might get cataracts (cloudy eyes) or increased pressure in your eyes (risk of glaucoma).
RARE
  • Irritation at the injection site.
  • Painless damage to joints, especially after many injections.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to prednisolone or similar medicines, or if you have Cushing's disease, a stomach ulcer, a body-wide fungal infection, certain viral infections (like chickenpox or herpes), or glaucoma (high eye pressure).
  • Tell your doctor if you have brittle bones (osteoporosis), hidden tuberculosis, diabetes, mental health problems, heart or kidney problems, high blood pressure, migraines, or other infections.
  • If you are taking this medicine for a long time, do not stop suddenly. The dose must be slowly reduced as advised by your doctor to avoid symptoms from returning.
