How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide the right dose for you, based on your age, weight, and how calm you need to be.

Method

This medicine is diluted and given to you as a drip (infusion) into a vein.

Important

Your doctor or nurse will closely monitor your treatment and adjust the dose if needed, there is no fixed maximum daily dose for patients outside of medical supervision.

COMMON
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Difficulty breathing or pauses in breathing
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth
  • Restlessness
  • Fever
  • Withdrawal symptoms after stopping treatment
RARE
  • Weak heart function, cardiac arrest
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body (metabolic acidosis)
  • Low albumin levels in blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hallucinations
  • Medicine not working well

Important Warnings

  • You should not be given this medicine if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • You should not be given this medicine if you have certain heart rhythm problems (second or third-degree heart block).
  • You should not be given this medicine if you have very low blood pressure that cannot be controlled with treatment.
  • You should not be given this medicine if you have recently had a stroke or another serious problem affecting blood flow to your brain.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if your heart rate is unusually slow, as this could increase the risk of serious heart problems.

  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have low blood pressure or low blood volume (e.g., after bleeding).
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have certain heart conditions or severe liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have a nerve problem, like a head injury or stroke.
  • There might be a higher risk for patients aged 65 or younger, especially if they are in intensive care for reasons other than surgery. Your doctor will decide if this medicine is right for you.
  • This medicine can make you very sleepy. Do not drive, use machines, or do dangerous tasks until the medicine's effects have completely worn off. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to do these activities again.
