How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine the correct dose for you based on your age, weight, health, and the desired level of calm.

Method

The medicine is diluted and given as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital setting.

Important

The doctor will continuously monitor and adjust your dose as needed; there is no fixed maximum daily dose for patients to administer themselves.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Difficulty breathing or temporary stop in breathing
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth
  • Restlessness
  • High fever
  • Withdrawal symptoms after stopping treatment
RARE
  • Worsening heart function or cardiac arrest
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body (metabolic acidosis)
  • Low albumin levels in the blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hallucinations
  • The medicine not working effectively
  • Excessive urination and intense thirst (may be symptoms of a hormonal disorder called diabetes insipidus)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have certain severe heart rhythm problems (like 2nd or 3rd degree heart block), unless you have a pacemaker.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure that treatment cannot control.
  • Do not take if you recently had a stroke or another serious problem affecting blood flow to your brain.
  • Tell your doctor if your heart rate is unusually slow, as this can increase the risk of heart problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a serious fever after taking certain medicines, especially anesthetics.
  • This medicine may cause you to urinate a lot and feel very thirsty.
  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary; talk to your doctor first.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until the effects of this medicine have completely worn off, as it can strongly affect your ability to do so.
