How to Use

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Difficulty breathing or breathing stops
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth
  • Restlessness
  • High fever
  • Withdrawal symptoms
RARE
  • Weakened heart function, cardiac arrest
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body (metabolic acidosis)
  • Low albumin level in blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hallucinations
  • Ineffective treatment
  • Frequent urination and intense thirst (may be signs of a hormone disorder called diabetes insipidus)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain heart rhythm problems (like 2nd or 3rd-degree heart block).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have very low blood pressure that cannot be controlled.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have recently had a stroke or other serious brain blood flow problem.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an unusually slow heart rate, as this may increase the risk of cardiac arrest.
