How to Use

Dosage

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine in the hospital. The dose is adjusted individually based on your needs and monitored continuously.

Method

The medicine is given as a diluted drip into a vein.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Difficulty breathing or breathing stops
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth
  • Restlessness
  • High fever
  • Withdrawal symptoms (when stopping treatment)
RARE
  • Weakened heart function or cardiac arrest
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body (metabolic acidosis)
  • Low albumin levels in the blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hallucinations
  • Treatment not effective
  • Excessive urination and severe thirst (can be signs of a hormone disorder)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have certain heart rhythm problems (like 2nd or 3rd-degree heart block), very low blood pressure that is not controlled by treatment, or have recently had a stroke or severe brain circulation problem.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a very slow heart rate, low blood pressure, low blood volume (e.g., after bleeding), certain other heart diseases, are elderly, have a neurological injury (e.g., head injury, spinal cord injury, or stroke), severe liver disease, or have had a high fever after using other medicines, especially anesthetics.
  • This medicine may cause you to urinate a lot and feel very thirsty. If these occur, tell your doctor.
  • Using this medicine with other sedatives, strong pain relievers, or anesthetics can increase its effects.

  • If you are taking medicines for high blood pressure or to slow your heart rate, this medicine can make those effects stronger. It should not be used with medicines that cause temporary muscle weakness.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary and only after consulting your doctor.
  • This medicine strongly affects your ability to drive or use machines; do not perform these activities until its effects have completely worn off.
