COMMON

  • Fast heart rate

  • Nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth

  • High body temperature
  • Symptoms after stopping the medicine
RARE
  • Weakened heart function or cardiac arrest
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body (metabolic acidosis)
  • Low albumin level in the blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hallucinations
  • Medicine not working well enough
  • Excessive urination and extreme thirst (may be symptoms of a hormone disorder called diabetes insipidus)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have certain heart rhythm problems (like second or third-degree heart block), a very slow heart rate, low blood pressure that cannot be controlled, or other heart diseases.
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had a stroke, a head injury, spinal cord injury, or any other serious condition affecting blood flow to the brain or nerves.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low blood volume (e.g., after bleeding) or severe liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe fever after taking certain medicines, especially those used for anesthesia.

  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor says it is absolutely necessary.
  • Do not drive, operate machines, or work in dangerous situations until the effects of this medicine have completely worn off.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially sleeping pills, strong pain relievers, or anesthetics, and avoid alcohol, as they can increase the effects of this medicine.
