How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine the right dose for you, based on your age, weight, health, and how much sedation you need.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

Your doctor or nurse will adjust your dose as needed and monitor your heart and blood pressure during treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Changes in breathing or no breathing
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth
  • Restlessness
  • High fever
  • Withdrawal symptoms (when stopping the medicine)
RARE
  • Worsened heart function or cardiac arrest
  • Swelling in the abdomen
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body
  • Low blood albumin levels
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hallucinations
  • Treatment not working well
  • Very high urine output and extreme thirst (may be signs of a hormone problem called diabetes insipidus)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any other ingredients in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain severe heart rhythm disorders or very low blood pressure that cannot be controlled.
  • Do not take this medicine if you recently had a stroke or another serious condition affecting blood flow to your brain.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a very slow heart rate, low blood pressure, low blood volume (e.g., after bleeding), or other heart problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you are elderly, have severe liver disease, or a neurological problem (like a head injury or stroke).
