How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you, based on your age, weight, health, and how much calming you need.

Method

This medicine is given to you by a doctor or nurse as a continuous drip (infusion) into a vein.

Important

The doctor will adjust your dose as needed and monitor your heart and blood pressure during treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slow heart rate
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Changes in breathing or stopping breathing
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Fast heart rate
  • High or low blood sugar
  • Feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), or dry mouth
  • Feeling restless
  • High fever
  • Withdrawal symptoms after stopping the medicine
RARE
  • Worsening heart function or cardiac arrest
  • Swollen stomach
  • Thirst
  • Too much acid in the body (metabolic acidosis)
  • Low protein (albumin) level in the blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Medicine not working as expected
  • Excessive urination and extreme thirst (may be signs of a hormonal disorder called diabetes insipidus)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to dexmedetomidine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have certain severe heart rhythm problems (2nd or 3rd degree heart block).
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure that cannot be controlled with treatment.
  • Do not use if you have recently had a stroke or another serious condition affecting blood flow to the brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an unusually slow heart rate, as this may increase the risk of your heart stopping.
