How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a small dose, which will be gradually increased. The typical dose is 5–20 mg.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water, preferably with or right after a meal. Take the medicine daily at the same time in relation to meals. Do not take the last dose too late in the day to avoid sleep problems.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 20 mg, but in rare cases, it can be up to 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decreased appetite, slowed growth and weight loss in children.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Nervousness, anxiety, irritability, agitation, hyperactivity, unusual behavior, aggression.
  • Stomach pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth.
  • Dizziness, spinning sensation, twitching or involuntary movements, headache, joint pain.
  • Irregular or fast heartbeat, strong heartbeat, increased blood pressure.
RARE
  • Blurred vision, difficulty focusing eyes, enlarged pupils.
  • Chest pain.
  • Severe skin reactions like itchy red patches or peeling skin, rash, hives.
  • Inflammation or blockage of blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord.
  • Hallucinations, psychosis, suicidal thoughts or attempts.
  • Shortness of breath or swollen legs (signs of heart muscle problems).
  • Heart attack.
  • Very high body temperature.
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face or throat, trouble breathing, dizziness).
  • Muscle breakdown (muscle pain, cramps, weakness).
  • Stroke.
  • Addiction, compulsive behavior, panic attacks, paranoia.
  • Changes in blood cells (low red blood cells causing paleness, weakness; changes in other blood cell counts).
  • Liver problems (from high liver enzymes to liver coma).
  • Circulatory collapse (shock).
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white to blue to red) in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon).

Important Warnings

  • If you or your child are allergic to dexamfetamine, other amphetamines, or any other ingredient in this medicine, do not use it.
  • Do not use if you or your child have or have had serious heart problems, like a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or heart failure.
  • Do not use if you or your child have very high blood pressure or blood vessel problems that cause pain in your arms and legs.
  • Do not use if you or your child have serious mental health problems, such as psychosis, schizophrenia, severe depression, mania, or thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Do not use if you or your child are taking or have taken a medicine for depression called an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days.

  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have a history of alcohol, prescription medicine, or drug abuse.
