How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your exact dose based on your condition. For severe inflammation, doses may range from 4 mg to 40 mg or more per day. For COVID-19, the recommended dose for adults and children over 12 (weighing at least 40 kg) is 7.27 mg once daily for up to 10 days.

Method

This medicine is given by a healthcare professional as an injection into a vein, muscle, or other tissue. It should be given slowly over 2-3 minutes if injected into a vein.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections can be hidden, worsen, or come back (viral, fungal, bacterial, parasitic).
  • Changes in blood cell counts, weakened immune system, allergic reactions (skin rash).
  • "Moon face", weight gain, high blood sugar (diabetes), high blood fats, swelling (from high sodium), low potassium (may cause irregular heartbeat), increased appetite.
  • Depression, irritability, extreme happiness, anxiety, sleep problems, suicidal thoughts.
  • Increased pressure inside the head, new or worsened seizures (epilepsy).
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma), cataracts, vision changes, eye infections.
  • High blood pressure, increased risk of blood clots, fragile blood vessels.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcers, bleeding in the gut, pancreas inflammation, stomach discomfort, hiccups.
  • Stretch marks, thin skin, easy bruising, acne, increased body hair, skin discoloration.
  • Muscle weakness, bone loss (osteoporosis), tendon problems or tears, fat growths in the spine, stunted growth in children.
  • Irregular or absent periods, male-pattern hair growth in women, impotence.
  • Slow wound healing, irritation or pain at the injection site, skin thinning at the injection site.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with sudden itchy rash, swelling of hands, face, lips, or throat (making it hard to breathe), dizziness, or collapse.
  • Thickening of the heart muscle in premature babies.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to dexamethasone or any other ingredients, or if you have an untreated infection (including fungal infections).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can be dangerous. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually reduce the dose.
  • This medicine can hide signs of infection, making it harder to spot a new or worsening infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you notice swelling or rounding of your body and face, as these can be early signs of Cushing's syndrome, especially with long-term use.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other vision problems.
