How to Use

Dosage

Typically, for COVID-19, adults receive 6 mg intravenously once daily for up to 10 days. Your doctor will determine your exact dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein (intravenous), a muscle (intramuscular), or under the skin (subcutaneous). Intravenous injections are given slowly over 2-3 minutes.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Masking of infections, new or worsening viral, fungal, bacterial, or parasitic infections.
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., increase in white blood cells).
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash.
  • Cushing's syndrome (symptoms like moon face, fat around the belly, red face), adrenal gland not working properly.
  • Weight gain, high blood sugar, diabetes, high fat levels in blood, increased sodium (swelling), low potassium (can cause irregular heartbeat), increased appetite.
  • Depression, irritability, feeling overly happy, increased energy, psychosis, mania, hallucinations, mood swings, anxiety, sleep problems.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Stomach and intestinal ulcers, bleeding in the stomach or intestines, pancreas inflammation, stomach discomfort.
  • Stretch marks, thinning skin, easy bruising, increased body hair, acne, changes in skin color, inflamed skin on the face.
  • Muscle weakness or loss, fragile bones (osteoporosis).
  • Hormone problems (irregular or stopped periods, increased body hair in women, impotence).
  • Delayed wound healing.
  • Local irritation, pain, or thinning of the skin at the injection site.
RARE
  • Increased pressure inside the head, new seizures or worsening of existing epilepsy.
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma), cloudy lens (cataract), worsening corneal ulcers, increased risk of eye infections, drooping eyelid, vision problems, vision loss.
  • In rare cases, temporary bulging of the eyeballs.
  • Thickening of the heart muscle in premature babies (usually returns to normal after stopping treatment).
  • Increased risk of hardening of arteries, blood clots, inflammation of blood vessels, or fragile blood vessels.
  • Other types of bone loss, tendon inflammation or rupture, fat deposits in the spine, slowed growth in children.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dexamethasone or any other ingredients in it.
  • This medicine can hide signs of an infection, making it harder to find and treat.
  • If you have diabetes, your blood sugar levels need to be checked often as your diabetes medicine might need adjustment.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can cause serious problems.
  • If your child is under 5 years old and takes other medicines with propylene glycol or alcohol, talk to your doctor before giving them this medicine.
