How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide the right dose for you.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle, directly into a joint or tissue, or as a slow drip into a vein.

Important

For COVID-19, adults and young people (12 years and older) usually receive 6 mg into a vein once daily for up to 10 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weaker ability to fight infections
  • Swelling and redness in the face
  • Slower growth in children
  • Acne and more body hair in women
  • Weak bones (osteoporosis)
  • Problems with blood sugar, diabetes, or worsening diabetes
  • Low nitrogen in the blood
  • Mood changes, like feeling overly happy, trouble sleeping, or sadness
RARE
  • Allergic reactions like swelling, rash, and redness
  • Swelling due to problems with salt balance in the blood
  • More hunger and weight gain
  • High blood pressure, blood clots, and heart problems
  • Stomach problems, like nausea and stomach ulcers
  • Thin and fragile skin (bruises easily), slow wound healing
  • Eye problems, like high eye pressure (glaucoma), bulging eyes, and cloudy lenses (cataracts)
  • Tendon tear
  • Increased pressure inside the head
  • Tissue breakdown
  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Seizures
  • Headache, dizziness, and feeling generally unwell
  • Bone fractures
  • Muscle weakness in arms and legs
  • Blocked blood vessels
  • Body swelling due to too much fluid
  • Low potassium in the blood
  • Heart muscle problems after a recent heart attack
  • Rash and red skin
  • Stomach ulcers that may burst and bleed, throat sores, bloating
  • Vision problems, loss of sight, blurry vision
  • Thickening of the heart muscle in premature babies

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Dexacur if you are allergic to dexamethasone phosphate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a widespread infection that is not being treated.
  • Do not take if you are receiving live virus vaccines.
  • A severe allergic reaction can happen while taking Dexacur.
  • This medicine can cause adrenal gland problems, especially with high doses or long-term use.

  • Avoid chickenpox or measles, and contact your doctor right away if you think you've been exposed.
  • If you stop or lower your dose, you might get withdrawal symptoms like fever, tiredness, or muscle aches.
  • This medicine should not be injected directly into an infected area; if you have pain or swelling at the injection site, contact your doctor.

Category C
