How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 2 mg tablet, taken twice a day. If you have kidney or liver problems, or bothersome side effects, your doctor might lower your dose to one 1 mg tablet, twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Important

Do not take more than 4 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Bronchitis (inflammation of airways)
  • Dizziness, sleepiness, or tingling in fingers and toes
  • Dry eyes or blurred vision
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat fast or strong)
  • Indigestion, constipation, stomach pain, gas, or vomiting
  • Dry skin
  • Pain or difficulty urinating, or inability to fully empty the bladder
  • Tiredness, chest pain, or swelling (fluid retention, e.g., in ankles)
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhea
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Nervousness
  • Increased heart rate, heart failure, or irregular heartbeat
  • Heartburn
  • Memory problems

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Detrusitol if you are allergic to tolterodine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Detrusitol if you cannot empty your bladder (urinary retention).
  • Do not take Detrusitol if you have untreated narrow-angle glaucoma (high eye pressure that affects vision).
  • Do not take Detrusitol if you have severe muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis).
  • Do not take Detrusitol if you have severe inflammation of the large bowel (ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon).

  • Tell your doctor if you have trouble urinating or a weak urine stream.
  • Tell your doctor if you have stomach or bowel problems that affect how food passes or is digested.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a nerve problem that affects your blood pressure, bowels, or sexual function.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a hiatal hernia (where part of your stomach pushes up into your chest).
  • Tell your doctor if you have slow bowel movements or severe constipation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any heart problems, such as an abnormal EKG, slow or irregular heartbeat, weak heart muscle, or heart failure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium in your blood.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, or blurry vision. Be careful when driving or using machines.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, as it's not known if the medicine passes into breast milk.
