How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 2 mg tablet twice a day. If you have kidney or liver disease or bothersome side effects, your doctor may reduce your dose to one 1 mg tablet twice a day.

Method

Take the tablet whole by mouth.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 4 mg (two 2 mg tablets). For kidney or liver disease or severe side effects, it may be reduced to 2 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Bronchitis
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tingling in fingers and toes
  • Dry eyes, blurred vision
  • Vertigo
  • Palpitations
  • Digestive problems (indigestion), constipation, abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting
  • Dry skin
  • Pain or difficulty urinating, inability to empty bladder
  • Fatigue, chest pain, fluid retention in the body causing swelling (e.g., in ankles)
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhea
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Nervousness
  • Increased heart rate, heart failure, irregular heartbeat
  • Heartburn
  • Memory impairment

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to tolterodine or any other ingredients in Detrusitol.
  • Do not use if you cannot urinate (urinary retention).
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Do not use if you have myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness).
  • Do not use if you have severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of angioedema, such as swelling of the face, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, and difficulty breathing.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, easy fatigue (even at rest), difficulty breathing at night, or swollen legs, as these may be symptoms of heart failure.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include tachycardia, confusion and cognitive impairment. Increases risk of falls. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 25.11.2024)
