How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. For some conditions, it might be 60 micrograms three times a day or 60-120 micrograms at bedtime.

Method

Place the tablet under your tongue. It will dissolve without water.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can be up to 240 micrograms in some cases.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache (can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Low levels of sodium in your blood
  • Dizziness (can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Feeling sick (nausea, can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Stomach pain (can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Vomiting (can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Swelling of hands, arms, feet, or lower legs (fluid retention)
  • Tiredness
RARE
  • Sleep problems
  • Drowsiness
  • Tingling sensation
  • Confusion (can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Seizures (can be a sign of too much fluid)
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., rash, itching, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing)
  • Emotional problems (mainly in children)
  • Aggression (mainly in children)
  • Anxiety (mainly in children)

Important Warnings

  • Drink as little as possible for 1 hour before and 8 hours after taking the tablet. Too much fluid can cause serious problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to desmopressin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have moderate to severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have heart problems or other serious diseases for which you take water pills (diuretics).

  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you are elderly, have infections, fever, stomach flu, severe bladder problems, asthma, epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, or migraine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of fluid retention and hyponatraemia. Treatment of ADH deficiency can be started under specialist supervision. (updated 6.11.2023)
