How to Use

Dosage

The anesthesiologist will determine your dose based on your age, weight, and the type of surgery, and adjust it as needed.

Method

Usually, the medicine is given through a breathing tube after an initial injection; rarely, it may be inhaled through a mask.

Important

The anesthesiologist closely monitors the dosage, and the medicine is not given beyond the necessary amount for the procedure.

  • Slow heartbeat

  • Vocal cord spasm
  • Increased certain enzyme levels in blood
  • Changes in heart's electrical activity (ECG changes)
  • Abnormal heart rhythm (prolonged QTc interval in ECG)
RARE
  • Restlessness or agitation
  • Dizziness
  • Heart attack
  • Reduced blood flow to heart muscle
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • Widened blood vessels
  • Lack of oxygen
  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Irregular or abnormal heartbeat in children
  • Rapid and significant increase in body temperature during surgery (malignant hyperthermia)
  • Blood clotting disorder
  • Increased or decreased potassium in blood
  • Too much acid in body fluids
  • Seizures
  • Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice)
  • Heart failure or cardiac arrest
  • Severe heart rhythm disorders with rapid, irregular pulse
  • Ventricular dysfunction (weak heart chambers)
  • Very high blood pressure
  • Bleeding
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shock (when body tissues don't get enough blood)
  • Breathing difficulties or respiratory arrest
  • Sudden tightening of airway muscles (bronchospasm)
  • Coughing up blood from lungs
  • Sudden inflammation of pancreas
  • Stomach pain
  • Liver cell death
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Blocked bile flow from liver
  • Liver dysfunction or liver disease
  • Hives
  • Skin redness
  • Feeling weak
  • General discomfort

  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Increased ammonia or bilirubin levels in blood

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you have previously had medical reasons for not receiving general anesthesia.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to desflurane or other similar anesthetics.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member has experienced a rapid increase in body temperature during or shortly after surgery (malignant hyperthermia).
  • This medicine is not used to start anesthesia in children due to the risk of coughing and other breathing difficulties.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.
