How to Use

Dosage

Your dentist will determine the dose based on your age, weight, and the procedure; the smallest effective dose should be used.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow injection into your mouth by a dentist.

Important

The maximum dose for adults and adolescents is 7 mg of articaine per kilogram of body weight, up to a maximum of 500 mg. For children over 4 years old, the maximum dose is also 7 mg of articaine per kilogram of body weight, up to 385 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Gingivitis (gum inflammation)
  • Neuropathic pain (pain caused by nerve damage)
  • Numbness or reduced sensation inside and around the mouth
  • Metallic taste, taste disturbance or loss of taste
  • Increased, unpleasant or abnormal touch sensations
  • Increased sensitivity to heat
  • Headache
  • Abnormal rapid heartbeat
  • Abnormal slow heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Swelling of the tongue, lips and gums
RARE
  • Burning sensation
  • High blood pressure
  • Inflammation of the tongue and mouth
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Rash and itching
  • Pain in the neck or at the injection site
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Facial nerve disorder (facial paralysis)
  • Drowsiness
  • Involuntary eye movements
  • Double vision, temporary blindness
  • Drooping eyelid and constricted pupil (Horner's syndrome)
  • Sunken eye (enoftalmus)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hypersensitivity to sound
  • Palpitations (heart throbbing)
  • Hot flashes
  • Wheezing (bronchospasm), asthma
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Gum peeling and ulcers
  • Skin peeling at the injection site
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Muscle twitching, involuntary muscle spasms
  • Fatigue, weakness
  • Chills
  • Permanent loss of sensation, prolonged numbness, and loss of taste

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to articaine, adrenaline, other local anesthetics, or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your dentist if you have severe heart problems (e.g., severe irregular heartbeat, recent heart attack), uncontrolled epilepsy, very high blood pressure, or uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Do not eat or chew gum until your mouth sensation returns, especially for children, to avoid biting your lip, cheek, or tongue.
  • If you feel dizzy, have blurred vision, or are tired, do not drive or use machines until you feel normal again (usually within 30 minutes after the dental procedure).
  • This medicine contains sodium metabisulfite, which can rarely cause severe allergic reactions or breathing problems (like asthma attacks).
