How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take based on your weight; typically 7–14 mg per kilogram daily.

Method

Take once a day, around the same time, with water. You can take it on an empty stomach or with a light meal. If you can't swallow the tablet, crush it and mix with a small amount of soft food (like yogurt or applesauce) and eat it all right away.

Important

The highest daily dose is usually 28 mg per kilogram of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in kidney test results
  • Stomach problems like feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, constipation, or indigestion.
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Changes in liver test results
  • Itching
  • Changes in urine test results (protein in urine)
RARE
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Swelling of arms or legs
  • Changes in skin color
  • Feeling anxious
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling tired
  • Blurred or unclear vision
  • Hearing loss
  • Lower numbers of blood cells (like platelets, red blood cells, or white blood cells)
  • Hair loss
  • Kidney stones
  • Producing less urine
  • A tear in the wall of your stomach or intestine
  • Unusual levels of acid in your blood

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to deferasirox or any other ingredient in it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, or if you notice you are urinating much less.
  • Get help from a doctor right away if you get a bad rash, trouble breathing, swelling of your face or throat, or symptoms like red skin, blisters, high fever, and flu-like signs.
  • This medicine is not advised if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are planning a baby.
  • If you feel dizzy after taking this medicine, do not drive or use machines until you feel normal again.
