How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose based on your weight, usually 14 mg/kg daily for patients receiving regular blood transfusions, or 7 mg/kg daily for those not receiving regular transfusions.

Method

Take once daily, around the same time each day, with water, either on an empty stomach or with a light meal. If you cannot swallow whole tablets, you can crush them and mix the powder with a small amount of soft food (e.g., yogurt or applesauce) and consume immediately.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 28 mg/kg for patients receiving regular blood transfusions, 14 mg/kg for adults not receiving regular transfusions, and 7 mg/kg for children/adolescents not receiving regular transfusions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in kidney function test results.
  • Digestive system symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, abdominal bloating, constipation, indigestion).
  • Rash.
  • Headache.
  • Changes in liver function test results.
  • Itching.
  • Protein in urine (abnormal urine test results).
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., severe rash, difficulty breathing, facial swelling).
  • Severe skin reaction (e.g., blisters, peeling skin, high fever, flu-like symptoms).
  • Significantly reduced urine output or kidney stones.
  • Symptoms of liver problems (e.g., drowsiness, yellowing of skin, dark urine, upper right abdominal pain).
  • Changes in brain function (e.g., difficulty thinking or remembering, extreme tiredness).
  • Vomiting blood or black stools.
  • Severe or recurrent stomach pain, heartburn, or stomach/intestinal rupture.
  • Worsening or blurring of vision.
  • Worsening of hearing.
  • Dizziness, fever, sore throat, anxiety, sleep disturbances, or fatigue.
  • Reduction in blood cell counts (e.g., platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells).
  • Hair loss.
  • Abnormal blood acid levels.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to deferasirox or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have moderate to severe kidney disease or are already taking other iron-removing medicines.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or heart issues caused by too much iron.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if your urine output significantly decreases.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a severe rash, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat, as these can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a rash, red skin, blisters, peeling skin, high fever, or flu-like symptoms, as these can be signs of a severe skin reaction.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience drowsiness, upper right abdominal pain, yellow skin, or dark urine, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have difficulty thinking, remembering, concentrating, feel very drowsy, or are extremely tired.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you vomit blood, have black stools, or experience recurrent, severe stomach pain or heartburn.
  • Tell your doctor if blood tests show low platelet or white blood cell counts, your vision becomes blurry, or you experience diarrhea or vomiting.
