How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose is 14 mg per kg of body weight daily for patients receiving regular blood transfusions, and 7 mg per kg daily for those not receiving regular transfusions. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your response.

Method

Take Deferasirox Glenmark once a day, around the same time each day, with a small amount of water. You can take it on an empty stomach or with a light meal. If you cannot swallow the tablets whole, you can crush them and sprinkle the entire dose on soft food like yogurt or applesauce. Eat the food immediately and completely.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 28 mg per kg of body weight for patients receiving regular blood transfusions, 14 mg per kg for adults not receiving regular transfusions, and 7 mg per kg for children and adolescents not receiving regular transfusions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abnormal kidney function tests.
  • Stomach and gut problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, constipation, indigestion.
  • Rash.
  • Headache.
  • Abnormal liver function tests.
  • Itching.
  • Abnormal urine tests (protein in urine).
RARE
  • Dizziness.
  • Fever.
  • Sore throat.
  • Swelling of arms or legs.
  • Skin color changes.
  • Anxiety.
  • Sleep disturbances.
  • Tiredness.
  • Decrease in blood cells involved in clotting (thrombocytopenia), red blood cells (worsening anemia), white blood cells (neutropenia), or all types of blood cells (pancytopenia).
  • Hair loss.
  • Kidney stones.
  • Low urine production.
  • Stomach or bowel wall tear, which can be painful and cause nausea.
  • Severe upper abdominal pain (pancreatitis).
  • Abnormal blood acid levels.

Important Warnings

  • If you develop a severe rash, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of your face and throat (signs of a severe allergic reaction).
  • If you experience at least two of the following: rash, red skin, blisters on lips, eyes, or mouth, peeling skin, high fever, flu-like symptoms, or swollen lymph nodes (signs of a severe skin reaction).
  • If you notice a significant decrease in your urine output (signs of kidney problems).
  • If you experience a combination of drowsiness, pain in the upper right abdomen, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and dark urine (signs of liver problems).
  • If you have difficulty thinking, remembering, or solving problems, reduced alertness, or feel very sleepy and low in energy (signs of high ammonia levels in blood, which may be related to liver or kidney problems and lead to changes in brain function).

  • If you frequently have stomach pain, especially after eating or taking Deferasirox Glenmark.
  • If you frequently have heartburn.
  • If you experience partial loss of vision.
  • If you experience severe upper abdominal pain (pancreatitis).
  • If you experience blurred or cloudy vision.
  • If you start to hear less well.
