How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 14 mg/kg per day for patients receiving regular blood transfusions, and 7 mg/kg per day for those not receiving regular blood transfusions. Your doctor will determine your exact dose.

Method

Take the medicine once a day, around the same time each day, with water. You can take it on an empty stomach or with a light meal. If you cannot swallow the tablet whole, you can crush it and mix it with soft food like yogurt or applesauce, then eat it immediately.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 28 mg/kg for patients receiving regular blood transfusions, 14 mg/kg for adults not receiving regular blood transfusions, and 7 mg/kg for children and adolescents not receiving regular blood transfusions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abnormal kidney function test results.
  • Digestive problems, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and indigestion.
  • Rash.
  • Headache.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
  • Itching.
  • Protein in urine (seen in urine tests).
RARE
  • Dizziness.
  • Fever.
  • Sore throat.
  • Swelling of arms or legs.
  • Skin color changes.
  • Anxiety.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Fatigue.
  • Changes in blood cell counts (decrease in platelets, red or white blood cells).
  • Hair loss.
  • Kidney stones.
  • Low urine output.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcers that can be painful and cause nausea.
  • Severe upper abdominal pain (pancreatitis).
  • Abnormal blood acid levels.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to deferasirox or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Do not use if you have moderate to severe kidney disease.
  • Do not use if you are currently taking other iron-removing medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems related to iron overload.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if your urination significantly decreases (this may indicate kidney problems).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a severe rash, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of your face and throat.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a rash, red skin, blisters on your lips, eyes or mouth, peeling skin, high fever, flu-like symptoms, or enlarged lymph nodes.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience a combination of symptoms: drowsiness, pain in the upper right abdomen, yellowing of skin or eyes, or dark urine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have difficulty thinking, remembering, or solving problems, or if you are very drowsy and weak (signs of high ammonia levels).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you vomit blood and/or have black stools.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you often have abdominal pain, especially after eating or taking Deferasirox Glenmark.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you often have heartburn.
  • Tell your doctor if your blood tests show low platelet or white blood cell counts.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if your vision blurs or becomes unclear.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if your hearing deteriorates.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe upper abdominal pain (pancreatitis).
