Dasatinib Viatris is a medicine used to treat certain types of blood cancer (leukemia) in adults and children aged 1 year and older by stopping the growth of cancer cells.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, but it is usually 100 mg or 140 mg once daily for adults. For children, the dose depends on their weight.

Method

Take the tablets whole at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not crush, break, or chew them.

Important

The highest initial recommended daily dose for adults is 140 mg. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections (e.g., bacterial, viral, fungal, pneumonia, herpes, upper respiratory)
  • Shortness of breath, cough, palpitations, irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, fluid around lungs or heart
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, changes in appetite, constipation, heartburn, mouth ulcers, weight changes
  • Rash, fever, swelling (face, hands, feet), headache, tiredness, weakness, bleeding, bruising, itching, dry skin, acne, hair loss, excessive sweating, blurred vision, dry eyes, depression, insomnia, dizziness, general swelling
  • Muscle pain, joint pain, chest pain, hand and foot pain, chills, muscle and joint stiffness, muscle cramps
  • Low levels of platelets, white blood cells, or red blood cells (anemia), high uric acid in blood
RARE
  • Heart attack (possibly fatal), heart sac inflammation, chest pain from poor blood flow, low blood pressure, asthma, high blood pressure in lung arteries, enlarged heart chamber, heart muscle inflammation, heart failure, cardiac arrest, blood clots in lungs or other vessels
  • Pancreatitis, stomach ulcer, esophagus inflammation, swollen stomach, difficulty swallowing, gallbladder inflammation, bowel obstruction, anal fistula, diabetes, severe internal bleeding, nutrient loss
  • Severe allergic reaction, anxiety, confusion, mood changes, fainting, tremors, eye inflammation, hearing loss, decreased vision, light sensitivity, blistering skin, nail problems, hand-foot syndrome, kidney failure, frequent urination, male breast enlargement, menstrual problems, general weakness, over/underactive thyroid, balance issues, bone problems (bone necrosis, slowed growth), seizures, nerve inflammation (vision loss), blue-purple skin, skin fibrosis, skin ulcers, fever with skin blisters and ulcers
  • Vein inflammation, tendon inflammation
  • Memory loss, stroke, facial paralysis, dementia, problems with muscle coordination
  • Abnormal blood tests, kidney problems from tumor breakdown, low albumin, low lymphocyte count, high cholesterol, swollen lymph nodes, protein in urine, increased levels of certain enzymes, milky fluid around lungs

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dasatinib or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you take medicines that thin your blood or prevent blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver or heart problems.
  • Contact your doctor if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, or cough during treatment. These could be signs of fluid in your lungs.
  • If you have or have had Hepatitis B, this medicine could reactivate it. Your doctor will check for this.

  • Contact your doctor if you notice unusual bruising, bleeding, fever, tiredness, or confusion. These could be signs of blood vessel damage.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 1 year of age.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Use effective birth control during treatment and do not breastfeed.
  • Be careful when driving or operating machines if you feel dizzy or have blurred vision.
  • Do not take antacids (stomach acid reducers) 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking this medicine.
  • Avoid taking this medicine with certain antifungals, antibiotics, antivirals, epilepsy medicines, tuberculosis medicines, strong stomach acid reducers, and St. John's wort.
