Dasatinib Viatris is a medicine that helps stop the growth of leukemia cells in certain types of blood cancer in adults, teenagers, and children aged 1 year and older.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults with chronic phase CML, the usual starting dose is 100 mg once a day. For adults with accelerated or blast crisis CML or Ph+ ALL, the usual starting dose is 140 mg once a day. Doses for children are based on their body weight.

Method

Take your tablets whole with water at the same time each day. Do not crush, break, or chew them. You can take them with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum safe daily dose, which may change based on your condition and how you respond to treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections (like bacterial, viral, fungal infections, pneumonia, herpes infections including CMV, upper respiratory infections, serious blood or tissue infections which in rare cases can be fatal).
  • Shortness of breath, feeling your heart beat fast (palpitations), irregular heartbeats, heart failure, high blood pressure, high blood pressure in the lungs, cough.
  • Diarrhea, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting (being sick), changes in appetite, taste changes, swollen stomach, colon inflammation, constipation, heartburn, mouth sores, weight gain or loss, stomach inflammation.
  • Skin rash, fever, swelling (in face, hands, feet), headache, feeling tired or weak, bleeding, skin tingling, itching, dry skin, acne, skin inflammation, constant ringing in ears, hair loss, sweating a lot, vision problems (like blurry or weaker vision), dry eyes, bruising, feeling sad or down (depression), trouble sleeping, flushing, dizziness, drowsiness, general swelling.
  • Muscle pain (during or after treatment), stomach pain, joint pain, muscle weakness, chest pain, pain in hands and feet, chills, stiff muscles and joints, muscle cramps.
  • Low numbers of blood platelets or white blood cells (neutropenia), anemia (low red blood cells), fluid around the lungs or heart, irregular heart rhythm, fever with low white blood cells, bleeding in the stomach or gut, high levels of uric acid in the blood.
RARE
  • Heart attack (can sometimes be fatal), inflammation of the sac around the heart, irregular heartbeats, chest pain from poor blood supply to the heart, low blood pressure, narrowed airways causing breathing problems, asthma, high blood pressure in lung arteries, enlarged right side of the heart, heart muscle inflammation, conditions blocking blood flow to the heart (acute heart syndrome), heart stops beating, coronary artery disease, inflammation of the linings of the heart and lungs, blood clots in veins or lungs.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), stomach ulcers, inflammation of the esophagus, swollen abdomen, tears in the anal skin, trouble swallowing, inflammation of the gallbladder, blocked bile ducts, acid reflux (stomach acid coming back up), poor absorption of important nutrients (like proteins) from the gut, blocked bowel, anal fistula (abnormal opening near the anus), kidney problems, diabetes.
  • Allergic reaction (including tender, red skin bumps), anxiety, confusion, mood changes, lower sex drive, fainting, shaking, red or painful eye inflammation, skin condition with tender, red, raised spots with sudden fever and high white blood cell count (neutrophilic dermatosis), hearing loss, sensitivity to light, worse vision, more tears, changes in skin color, inflammation of fat under skin, skin ulcers, skin blistering, nail changes, hair problems, hand-foot syndrome, kidney problems, needing to urinate often, breast enlargement in men, menstrual problems, general weakness and discomfort, low thyroid function, balance problems when walking, bone tissue death due to poor blood supply (osteonecrosis), joint inflammation, swelling of the skin anywhere on the body, seizures, optic nerve inflammation (can lead to partial or complete vision loss), bluish-purple skin, overactive thyroid, thyroid inflammation, problems with muscle coordination (ataxia), trouble walking, miscarriage, inflammation of blood vessels in the skin, skin thickening.
  • Vein inflammation (can cause redness, tenderness, and swelling), tendon inflammation.
  • Memory loss, stroke, temporary nervous system problems due to reduced blood flow, facial paralysis, dementia.
  • Abnormal blood tests, possible kidney problems from tumor breakdown products, low albumin (a protein) in blood, low lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) in blood, high cholesterol, swollen lymph nodes, bleeding in the brain, irregular electrical activity of the heart, enlarged heart, liver inflammation, protein in urine, high levels of certain enzymes (creatine kinase, troponin, gamma-glutamyltransferase), milky fluid around the lungs.
  • Severe allergic reaction.
  • Slow bone healing at growth plates, slower or delayed growth.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you take medicines that thin your blood or prevent blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver or heart disease.
  • See a doctor right away if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, or a cough. These could be signs of fluid in your lungs.
  • This medicine can reactivate Hepatitis B, which can be very serious. Your doctor will check for this infection before you start treatment.
  • Call your doctor right away if you get unexplained bruises, bleeding, fever, feel very tired, or confused. These could be signs of blood vessel damage.

  • Do not use Dasatinib Viatris with certain other medicines, including some medicines for fungal infections, bacterial infections, viral infections, epilepsy, tuberculosis, or stomach acid problems, and St. John's wort.
  • Do not take antacids (like aluminum or magnesium hydroxide) for 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Dasatinib Viatris.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use effective birth control during treatment.
  • Be careful when driving or using machines if you feel dizzy or your vision is blurry.
