Dasatinib Sandoz is a medicine used to treat certain types of leukemia, a cancer of white blood cells, in adults and children aged 1 year and older, by stopping the growth of cancer cells.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 100 mg once a day for chronic phase CML, or 140 mg once a day for advanced CML or Ph+ ALL. For children, the dose is based on body weight, ranging from 40 mg to 100 mg once a day, as determined by your doctor.

Method

Take the tablets whole with or without food, at the same time each day. Do not crush, break, or chew them.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can be adjusted based on your condition and response to treatment. The highest usual starting dose for adults is 140 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections (like bacterial, viral, fungal infections)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting)
  • Skin rash, fever, swelling in face, hands, or feet, headache, feeling tired or weak, bleeding easily
  • Muscle pain, stomach pain, joint pain, weak muscles, chest pain, pain in hands and feet, chills, stiff muscles and joints, muscle cramps
  • Low blood counts (platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells), fluid around the lungs or heart, irregular heartbeat, stomach bleeding, high uric acid in blood
  • Pneumonia, herpes infections, upper breathing tract infections, serious blood or tissue infections
  • Fast or uneven heartbeat (palpitations), heart failure, weak heart muscle, high blood pressure, cough
  • Problems with appetite or taste, bloated stomach, colon inflammation, constipation, heartburn, mouth sores, weight changes, stomach inflammation
  • Tingling, itching, dry skin, acne, skin inflammation, ringing in ears, hair loss, sweating a lot, vision problems (blurry vision), dry eyes, bruises, feeling down, trouble sleeping, flushing, dizziness, drowsiness, general swelling
RARE
  • Heart attack (can be fatal), inflammation of the sac around the heart, chest pain from heart problems, very low blood pressure, breathing difficulties from narrowed airways, asthma, high blood pressure in lung arteries, enlarged right heart chamber, heart muscle inflammation, serious heart blood flow issues, sudden heart stopping, heart disease, inflammation around heart and lungs, blood clots in legs or lungs
  • Pancreatitis, stomach ulcers, esophagus inflammation, swollen abdomen, anal fissure, difficulty swallowing, gallbladder inflammation, blocked bile ducts, acid reflux, loss of important nutrients, bowel blockage, anal fistula, kidney problems, diabetes
  • Allergic reactions with red, painful skin lumps, anxiety, confusion, mood swings, lower sex drive, fainting, shaking, red/painful eyes, skin disease with red patches and fever, hearing loss, light sensitivity, vision loss, more tears, skin color changes, skin ulcers, blisters, nail/hair problems, hand-foot syndrome, frequent urination, male breast enlargement, menstrual problems, general weakness/discomfort, low thyroid function, balance issues when walking, bone tissue death (osteonecrosis), arthritis, body swelling, seizures, optic nerve inflammation (can cause blindness), blue-colored skin, overactive thyroid, thyroid inflammation, poor muscle coordination, walking issues, miscarriage, inflamed skin blood vessels, skin hardening
  • Vein inflammation with redness, pain, and swelling, tendinitis
  • Memory loss, stroke, temporary nerve problems from poor blood flow, facial nerve paralysis, dementia

  • Slow bone growth in children, slowed or delayed overall growth
  • Abnormal blood tests, kidney problems from cancer cells breaking down, low protein in blood, low certain white blood cells (lymphocytes), high cholesterol, swollen lymph nodes, bleeding in brain, irregular heart's electrical signals, enlarged heart, liver inflammation, protein in urine, high levels of certain enzymes (creatine kinase, troponin, gamma-glutamyl transferase), milky fluid around lungs

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to dasatinib or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners or medicines that prevent blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had or currently have liver or heart disease.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience breathing difficulties, chest pain, or cough, as this could be a sign of fluid build-up in your lungs or changes in blood vessels.
  • If you have ever had Hepatitis B, Dasatinib Sandoz can reactivate it, which can be serious. Your doctor will check for this.

  • Seek medical attention if you notice unexpected bruising, bleeding, fever, unusual tiredness, or confusion, as these might indicate blood vessel damage (TMA).
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 1 year of age.
  • Do not take this medicine with certain other medicines like ketoconazole, itraconazole (for fungal infections), erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin (antibiotics), ritonavir (for viral infections), phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital (for epilepsy), rifampicin (for tuberculosis), famotidine, omeprazole (for stomach acid), or St. John's wort (a herbal remedy).
  • Do not take antacids (medicines that neutralize stomach acid) 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Dasatinib Sandoz.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking Dasatinib Sandoz.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your doctor. You should not use Dasatinib Sandoz during pregnancy unless your doctor says it's absolutely necessary. Stop breastfeeding while taking this medicine.
  • Be cautious when driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness or blurred vision.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars (like lactose), talk to them before taking this medicine.
