How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. The dose depends on your weight and the type of infection. For adults, it's usually 4 mg per kg for skin infections or 6 mg per kg for heart/blood infections, given once a day. For children (2-17 years), the dose is 5-9 mg per kg once a day, depending on age.

Method

The medicine is given directly into your vein. Adults may receive it as a slow drip (infusion) over 30-60 minutes or a quick injection over 2 minutes. Children receive it as an infusion over 30-60 minutes.

Important

Do not take more than one dose per day. Your doctor will decide how long you need to take the medicine, usually 1-2 weeks for skin infections.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Dizziness, anxiety, trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Fever, weakness
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Constipation, stomach pain
  • Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Gas, bloating or swelling of the abdomen
  • Rash or itching
  • Pain, itching, or redness at the injection site
  • Pain in hands/arms or legs
  • High liver enzymes or CK levels in blood tests
RARE
  • Blood disorders (e.g., increased platelets or certain white blood cells)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Tingling or numbness in hands/feet, changes in taste
  • Tremor
  • Changes in heart rhythm, flushing
  • Indigestion, inflamed tongue
  • Itchy skin rash
  • Muscle pain or weakness, muscle inflammation (myositis), joint pain
  • Kidney problems
  • Vaginal inflammation or irritation
  • General pain or weakness, tiredness
  • High blood sugar, creatinine, myoglobin, or LDH in blood tests; prolonged blood clotting time; electrolyte imbalance
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Prolonged prothrombin time (coagulation time)
  • Antibiotic-associated colitis (severe diarrhea with blood/mucus, stomach pain or fever)
  • Eosinophilic pneumonia (lung disease with difficulty breathing, cough, fever)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to daptomycin, sodium hydroxide, or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had kidney problems, as your dose may need to be changed.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Your doctor may check your blood.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, swelling of your face/throat, rash, hives, or fever.
  • Inform your doctor if you experience unusual tingling, numbness, or difficulty moving your hands or feet.

  • Contact your doctor if you have severe or long-lasting diarrhea, especially if it contains blood or mucus.
  • Tell your doctor if you develop new or worsening fever, cough, or trouble breathing, as these could be signs of a rare lung condition.
  • This medicine can affect tests for blood clotting. Make sure your doctor knows you are taking this medicine.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 1 year old.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine, as it can pass into breast milk and affect your baby.
  • If you are very overweight, your doctor will carefully watch you for side effects.
