How to Use

Dosage

For adults, 4 mg per kg of body weight for skin infections or 6 mg per kg for heart or bloodstream infections, once a day. For children, the dose depends on their age and the type of infection.

Method

The medicine is given directly into a vein, either as about a 30-minute infusion or a 2-minute injection for adults. For children, it is given as a 30-60 minute infusion.

Important

Usually once a day, but your doctor may adjust the dose if you have kidney problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Reduced red blood cells (anemia)
  • Dizziness, anxiety, trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Fever, weakness
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Constipation, abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Gas
  • Abdominal swelling or bloating
  • Rashes or itching
  • Pain, itching or redness at the infusion site
  • Pain in hands/arms or legs
  • Higher liver enzymes or CPK levels in blood tests
RARE
  • Blood disorders that increase clotting tendency or increase certain white blood cells
  • Decreased appetite
  • Tingling or numbness in hands/feet, changes in taste
  • Tremor
  • Heart rhythm changes, flushing
  • Indigestion, tongue inflammation
  • Itchy rash
  • Muscle pain, cramps, or weakness, muscle inflammation (myositis), joint pain
  • Kidney problems
  • Vaginal inflammation or irritation
  • General pain or weakness, fatigue
  • High blood sugar, creatinine, myoglobin, or LDH levels in blood tests, prolonged blood clotting time, or electrolyte imbalance
  • Itchy eyes
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Prolonged prothrombin time (blood clotting time)
  • Easy bruising, bleeding gums, or nosebleeds

Important Warnings

  • If you have or have had kidney problems, your doctor may need to change your dose.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, or rash.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you develop fever, rash, blisters, or sores on your skin or in your mouth.
  • Tell your doctor if you develop severe or prolonged diarrhea, especially if it contains blood or mucus.

  • Inform your doctor if you have fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, as these can be signs of a rare but serious lung disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience unusual tingling, numbness, or loss of sensation in your hands or feet.
  • Inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine, as it can affect blood clotting tests.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 1 year of age.
