How to Use

Dosage

For adults, 4 mg per kg of body weight for skin infections or 6 mg per kg for heart or blood infections, once daily. For children, the dose depends on age and infection type.

Method

The medicine is given directly into a vein: for adults, either as an infusion over 30 minutes or an injection over 2 minutes; for children, as an infusion over 30-60 minutes.

Important

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Dizziness, anxiety, trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Fever, feeling weak
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Constipation, stomach pain
  • Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Gas, stomach swelling or bloating
  • Rash or itching
  • Pain, itching or redness at the injection site
  • Pain in hands/arms or legs
  • High liver enzymes or CPK levels in blood tests
RARE
  • Blood disorders (e.g., increased platelets or certain white blood cells)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Unusual sensations in hands or feet (tingling, numbness), changes in taste
  • Tremor
  • Changes in heart rhythm, flushing
  • Indigestion, tongue inflammation
  • Muscle pain, cramps, weakness, muscle inflammation (myositis), joint pain
  • Kidney problems
  • Vaginal inflammation or irritation
  • General pain or weakness, fatigue
  • Abnormal blood tests (high blood sugar, creatinine, myoglobin, LDH, prolonged clotting time, or electrolyte imbalances)
  • Itchy eyes
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Prolonged bleeding time (prothrombin time)
  • Severe or persistent diarrhea (colitis, possibly bloody or mucous with stomach pain or fever)
  • Increased bruising or bleeding (gums, nose)
  • Severe allergic reactions (chest pain, rash, swelling, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, hot flashes, dizziness, fainting, metallic taste in mouth)
  • Severe skin conditions (fever, red blisters, peeling skin, sores in mouth or genitals)
  • Severe kidney problems (fever, rash)
  • Rare lung disease (eosinophilic pneumonia, difficulty breathing, cough, fever)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to daptomycin or sodium hydroxide.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse right away if you get a serious allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, swelling of your face or throat, or a bad rash.
  • Report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor immediately, as it could be serious.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to change your dose.
  • Seek urgent medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like fever, blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth or genital area.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience unusual tingling or numbness in your hands or feet.
  • Inform your doctor if you get diarrhea, especially if it contains blood or mucus, or if it is severe or lasts a long time.
  • Contact your doctor if you have fever, cough, or trouble breathing, as these could be signs of a rare lung disease.
  • If you are very overweight, your doctor may need to monitor you more closely for side effects.
