How to Use

Dosage

The dose depends on your weight and the type of infection. It's usually 4 mg per kg for skin infections or 6 mg per kg for heart or blood infections.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give it directly into a vein (intravenously). For adults, it's given as an infusion over 30 minutes or an injection over 2 minutes. For children (1-17 years), it's given as an infusion over 30-60 minutes.

Important

This medicine is usually given once a day. If you have kidney problems, the dose might be given less often.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Reduced red blood cells (anemia)
  • Dizziness, anxiety, trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Fever, weakness (asthenia)
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Constipation, stomach pain
  • Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Gas (flatulence)
  • Abdominal swelling or bloating
  • Rash or itching
  • Pain, itching, or redness at the injection site
  • Pain in arms or legs
  • Blood tests showing higher levels of liver enzymes or creatine phosphokinase (CPK)
RARE
  • Blood disorders (e.g., increased platelets or certain white blood cells)
  • Reduced appetite
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet, changes in taste
  • Tremors
  • Changes in heart rhythm, flushing
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia), tongue inflammation
  • Itchy skin rash
  • Muscle pain, cramps, weakness, muscle inflammation (myositis), joint pain
  • Kidney problems
  • Vaginal inflammation or irritation
  • General pain or weakness, fatigue
  • Blood tests showing high blood sugar, creatinine, myoglobin, or LDH, prolonged blood clotting time, or electrolyte imbalance
  • Itchy eyes
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Prolonged prothrombin time (blood clotting time)
  • Colitis linked to antibiotics (severe or long-lasting diarrhea with blood and/or mucus, stomach pain, or fever)
  • Easy bruising, bleeding gums, or nosebleeds
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema) with symptoms like chest pain, rash, swelling around the throat, fast or weak pulse, wheezing, fever, chills, hot flashes, dizziness, fainting, metallic taste in mouth.
  • Severe muscle problems (rhabdomyolysis) which can lead to kidney damage
  • Rare, severe lung disease called eosinophilic pneumonia, with symptoms like difficulty breathing, cough, or fever, usually after more than 2 weeks of treatment.
  • Severe skin disorders with symptoms like fever, red raised or fluid-filled spots that can spread, or blisters/sores in the mouth or genital area.
  • Severe kidney problems with symptoms like fever and rash.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to daptomycin or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Your dose might need to be changed.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. You may need blood tests.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get severe skin rashes, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have signs of an allergic reaction like trouble breathing, swelling of your face/throat, rash, hives, or fever.

  • Tell your doctor if you feel unusual tingling, numbness, or weakness in your hands or feet.
  • Report severe or long-lasting diarrhea, especially if it contains blood or mucus.
  • Tell your doctor if you develop a fever, worsening cough, or trouble breathing, as these could be signs of a rare lung condition.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 1 year old.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you plan to become pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially statins, fibrates, cyclosporine, NSAIDs, or blood thinners like warfarin.
  • Your doctor will take blood tests to check your muscles and other levels regularly during treatment.
