How to Use

Dosage

One 10 mg tablet once a day. Your doctor may start with a 5 mg dose if you have liver problems.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with half a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, at any time of day, but try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Urinary tract infections (symptoms may include fever, chills, burning sensation when urinating, or back pain).
  • Low blood sugar (symptoms may include shaking, sweating, hunger, headache, confusion). This is more common if you also take insulin or other diabetes medications.
  • Genital yeast infections (irritation, itching, unusual discharge or odor).
  • Back pain.
  • Increased or more frequent urination.
  • Dizziness.
  • Rash.
  • Changes in cholesterol or fat levels in blood tests.
  • Increase in red blood cells in blood tests.
  • Reduced kidney function at the start of treatment (shown in blood tests).
RARE
  • Too much fluid loss (dry mouth, little or no urine, fast heartbeat).
  • Thirst.
  • Constipation.
  • Waking up at night to urinate.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Weight loss.
  • Increased creatinine or urea levels in blood tests at the start of treatment.
  • Angioedema (swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hives).
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, thirst, confusion, unusual breath smell).
  • Fournier's gangrene (a serious infection in the genital area, with pain, redness, and fever).
  • Kidney inflammation.

Important Warnings

  • If you have diabetes and experience nausea, stomach pain, intense thirst, confusion, or unusual breathing, seek medical help immediately. These can be signs of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you feel pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in your genital area along with fever, as this could be a sign of a serious infection called Fournier's gangrene.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have type 1 diabetes.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant (especially during the second or third trimester) or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor before use.
  • Tell your doctor if you have signs of dehydration, such as extreme thirst, very dry mouth, or if you can't eat or drink due to illness.

  • If you take this medicine with certain other diabetes medications (like insulin), your blood sugar might drop too low, causing symptoms like shaking, sweating, or confusion. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy.
