How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 10 mg tablet once a day. Your doctor might start you on a 5 mg dose if you have liver problems.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with half a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, at any time of day, but try to take it at the same time daily to help you remember.

Important

Do not take more than one 10 mg tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Genital yeast infection (may cause irritation, itching, unusual discharge or odor)
  • Back pain
  • More urine than usual or needing to pee more often
  • Changes in blood cholesterol or fat levels (seen in lab tests)
  • Increase in red blood cells (seen in lab tests)
  • Reduced kidney function (creatinine clearance, seen in lab tests) at the start of treatment
  • Dizziness
  • Rash
RARE
  • Too much fluid loss from your body (dehydration), which can cause a very dry or sticky mouth, peeing little or not at all, or a fast heartbeat
  • Thirst
  • Constipation
  • Waking up at night to pee
  • Dry mouth
  • Weight loss
  • Increased creatinine levels in blood (seen in lab tests) at the start of treatment
  • Increased urea levels in blood (seen in lab tests)
  • Kidney inflammation (tubulointerstitial nephritis)

Important Warnings

  • Seek urgent medical help if you experience swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, or trouble breathing.
  • Contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately if you have signs like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, excessive thirst, fast breathing, confusion, or a sweet smell on your breath, as these could be diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you develop severe pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in your genital or anal area, especially with fever, as this could be a serious infection called Fournier's gangrene.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you have fever, chills, burning pain when peeing, or back/side pain, which might indicate a severe urinary tract infection, and report any blood in your urine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience shaking, sweating, intense anxiety, fast heartbeat, hunger, headache, changes in vision, or confusion, especially if you take other diabetes medications, as these are signs of low blood sugar.
