How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 10 mg tablet once a day; your doctor might start you on 5 mg if you have liver problems.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with half a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, at any time of day, but try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 10 mg, as recommended by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling shaky, sweating, anxious, fast heartbeat, hungry, headache, changes in vision, or confusion.
  • Irritation, itching, or unusual discharge/smell in your private parts.
  • Back pain.
  • Needing to pee more often or passing more urine than usual.
  • Changes in cholesterol or fat levels in your blood (seen in tests).
  • Increase in red blood cells in your blood (seen in tests).
  • A decrease in how well your kidneys work at the start of treatment (seen in tests).
  • Feeling dizzy.
  • Skin rash.
  • Urinary tract infection.
RARE
  • High ketone levels in urine/blood, feeling sick, throwing up, stomach pain, very thirsty, fast breathing, confusion, unusual sleepiness, sweet/metallic breath, strange urine/sweat smell, quick weight loss.
  • Pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in your private parts or anal area with fever or feeling very unwell.
  • Swelling of face, tongue, or throat, trouble swallowing, hives, or breathing problems.
  • Very dry/sticky mouth, peeing little or not at all, or fast heartbeat.
  • Feeling very thirsty.
  • Trouble having bowel movements.
  • Waking up in the middle of the night to pee.
  • Having a dry mouth.
  • Losing weight.
  • Higher creatinine levels in your blood (seen in tests) at the start of treatment.
  • Higher urea levels in your blood (seen in tests).
  • Inflammation of the kidneys.

Important Warnings

  • Get help right away if you feel sick, throw up, have stomach pain, get very thirsty, breathe fast, feel confused, very sleepy, or if your breath smells sweet, metallic, or strange, or if you lose weight quickly. These could be signs of a serious problem called diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in your private parts or the area between your private parts and bottom, along with a fever or feeling very unwell. This could be a sign of a rare but very serious infection called Fournier's gangrene.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you have signs of a severe urinary tract infection, such as fever, chills, burning pain when you pee, or pain in your back or side.
  • If you take this medicine with insulin or other diabetes medications, your blood sugar may drop too low, causing you to shake, sweat, feel anxious, have a fast heartbeat, hunger, headache, blurred vision, or feel confused.
  • Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you have very high blood sugar, feel sick, throw up, have a fever, or can't eat or drink, as these can make you lose too much body fluid (dehydration).
