How to Use

Dosage

Typically, 1-4 mg of apomorphine hydrochloride per hour as an infusion. Your doctor will determine your exact dose and frequency.

Method

This medicine is given as a continuous infusion under the skin using a special pump, not as single injections. Change the injection site every 12 hours.

Important

Do not use more than 100 mg of apomorphine hydrochloride in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sore, red, or itchy lumps under the skin at the injection site (change site often to prevent).
  • Seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not real (hallucinations).
  • Feeling sick or throwing up (nausea or vomiting), especially at the start of treatment.
  • Feeling tired or very sleepy.
  • Confusion.
  • Yawning.
  • Dizziness or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.
RARE
  • Increased uncontrolled movements or shaking during 'on' periods.
  • A type of anemia where red blood cells are destroyed faster than they are made (hemolytic anemia).
  • Suddenly falling asleep.
  • Skin rash.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Sores or wounds at the injection site.
  • Feeling weak or short of breath, or having yellowish skin due to low red blood cells.
  • Lower number of platelets, which can lead to easier bleeding or bruising.
  • Severe allergic reaction, with symptoms like trouble breathing, chest tightness, or swelling of eyelids, face, lips, or tongue.
  • Too many white blood cells called eosinophils in your blood or tissues.
  • Swelling in your legs, feet, or fingers.
  • Fainting spells.
  • Aggression, agitation, or restlessness.
  • Headache.
  • Strong urges you can't control, such as gambling, increased sexual urges, excessive shopping, or binge eating.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are under 18 years old.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems or asthma.
  • Do not use if you have dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
  • Do not use if you have confusion or hallucinations.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.

  • Do not use if you have severe uncontrolled movements or muscle spasms due to levodopa treatment.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to apomorphine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you or a family member have a heart condition called long QT syndrome.
  • Do not use if you are taking ondansetron (a medicine for nausea and vomiting).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or heart problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have low blood pressure or feel dizzy when standing up.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking medicines for high blood pressure.
  • Talk to your doctor if you feel sick or vomit.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have mental health problems when starting this medicine.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy or cause you to fall asleep suddenly. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Your doctor will check you regularly if you use this medicine with levodopa (another Parkinson's medicine).
