How to Use

Dosage

The dose depends on your cancer type and body surface area, typically 200-250 mg per square meter of body surface.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein (intravenously) over 20-30 minutes by a doctor or nurse.

Important

Up to 1000 mg per square meter of body surface per dose, given every 3 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia), low white blood cell count (leukopenia), and/or low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting (can be severe).
RARE
  • Hair loss.
  • Increased skin pigmentation.
  • Skin sensitivity to light.
  • Flu-like symptoms (fatigue, chills, fever, muscle pain).
  • Infections.
  • Low count of all blood cells (pancytopenia).
  • Significant decrease in granulocytes (a type of white blood cell), known as agranulocytosis.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), with symptoms like low blood pressure, swelling (hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, throat), difficulty swallowing or breathing, rapid pulse, hives, itching, or skin redness.
  • Headache.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Confusion.
  • Weakness or faintness.
  • Seizures (convulsions).
  • Abnormal sensations in the face (numbness, tingling), facial numbness and flushing soon after injection.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels.
  • Impaired kidney function.
  • Skin redness (erythema).
  • Sudden rashes (maculopapular exanthema).
  • Hives (urticaria).
  • Irritation at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dacarbazine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if your white blood cell or platelet count is low.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take with yellow fever vaccine or at the same time as fotemustine.

  • Tell your doctor if you are receiving radiation therapy or other chemotherapy, as combining them with dacarbazine can harm your bone marrow.
  • Using dacarbazine with methoxypsoralen can make you more sensitive to sunlight.
  • Using dacarbazine with phenytoin can increase the chance of seizures.
  • Do not receive live vaccines while taking dacarbazine, as it may weaken your immune system and increase infection risk.
  • Do not eat right before receiving dacarbazine to reduce nausea or vomiting. Avoid alcohol during chemotherapy.
  • Women who can become pregnant and men should use effective contraception during and for a period after treatment.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines due to effects on the brain and nerves, or nausea and vomiting.
