How to Use

Dosage

A typical dose for skin cancer is 200–250 mg per square meter (m²) of body surface area once daily for five consecutive days every three weeks.

Method

The medication is given intravenously either as a fast injection into a vein or a slow infusion into a vein, lasting 15–30 minutes.

Important

The maximum single daily dose is 250 mg per square meter (m²) of body surface area.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decreased blood cell counts (red, white blood cells, and/or platelets), which can make you tired, more prone to infections, or bruise easily.
  • Loss of appetite, feeling sick (nausea), and throwing up (vomiting), which can be severe.
RARE
  • Hair loss.
  • Skin getting darker or more sensitive to sunlight.
  • Flu-like symptoms (feeling tired, chills, fever, muscle pain) or infections.
  • Very low counts of all blood cells or specific white blood cells (granulocytes).
  • Severe allergic reaction with symptoms like low blood pressure, swelling (hands, feet, face, lips, throat), fast pulse, hives, itching, or red skin.
  • Headache, blurred vision, confusion, drowsiness, or seizures.
  • Numbness, tingling, or redness in your face after the injection.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Liver problems (shown by high liver enzyme levels, yellow skin or eyes, or severe damage to liver blood vessels or cells).
  • Kidney problems.
  • Skin rashes (redness, spots, hives) or irritation at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to dacarbazine or any other ingredient.
  • If you have too few white blood cells and/or platelets in your blood.
  • If you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take yellow fever vaccine or live vaccines during this treatment.

  • Avoid alcohol and discuss eating just before a dose with your doctor to help reduce nausea.
