How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your exact dose based on your body size, blood counts, and other treatments you are receiving.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein over 20–30 minutes, prepared just before administration.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose individually.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Low white blood cell count (leukopenia)
  • Low platelet count in blood (thrombocytopenia)
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting
  • Bone marrow suppression (reduced production of all blood cells in the bone marrow)
RARE
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Increased skin pigmentation (hyperpigmentation)
  • Sensitivity to light (increased skin sensitivity to sunlight)
  • Flu-like symptoms (tiredness, chills, fever, and muscle pain)
  • Infections
  • Temporary rash
  • Blurred vision
  • Liver damage (hepatotoxicity)
  • Low count of all blood cells (pancytopenia)
  • Severe decrease in certain white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., low blood pressure, swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, rapid pulse, hives, and general itching or skin redness)
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Lethargy (apathetic state)
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Abnormal sensations in the face (paresthesia), facial numbness, and facial flushing soon after injection
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe liver problems due to blocked liver blood vessels (veno-occlusive disease, VOD) and liver cell destruction (liver necrosis), which can be life-threatening. Symptoms include fever, stomach pain, enlarged liver, and yellow skin.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Worsening kidney function
  • Skin redness (erythema)
  • Sudden rashes (maculopapular exanthema)
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Irritation at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to dacarbazine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have low white blood cell or platelet counts.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not use yellow fever vaccine with this medicine.

  • Avoid live vaccines during and for 3 months after treatment, as this medicine can weaken your immune system.
  • Do not eat right before receiving the medicine to help reduce nausea.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines.
  • Women must use effective birth control during treatment and for 6 months after.
  • Men must use effective birth control and avoid fathering a child during treatment and for 3 months after.
