How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your blood cell count, body size, and other cancer treatments you are receiving.

Method

The medicine is prepared by mixing the powder with water, then given as a slow drip into a vein over 15-30 minutes. It may be further diluted.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, which can vary based on your condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Leukopenia (low white blood cell count)
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting
  • Bone marrow suppression (reduced production of all blood cells)
RARE
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation)
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Flu-like symptoms (tiredness, chills, fever, muscle pain)
  • Infections
  • Temporary rash
  • Blurred vision
  • Liver damage (hepatotoxicity)
  • Pancytopenia (low count of all blood cells)
  • Agranulocytosis (severe decrease in certain white blood cells)
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., low blood pressure, swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, fast pulse, hives, generalized itching, or skin redness)
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Lethargy (apathy)
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Abnormal facial sensations (paresthesia), facial numbness and redness soon after injection
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe liver problems due to blocked liver blood vessels (veno-occlusive disease) and liver cell death (necrosis), which can be life-threatening.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Worsening kidney function
  • Red skin (erythema)
  • Sudden rashes (maculopapular exanthema)
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Irritation at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dacarbazine or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have low white blood cells or platelets. Your doctor will check your blood before each dose.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take with yellow fever vaccine.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines, especially phenytoin (for seizures) and live vaccines, as they may weaken your immune system.
  • Do not eat right before your dose to reduce nausea. Avoid alcohol during treatment.
  • Women should use effective contraception during treatment and for 6 months after. Men should use effective contraception and avoid fathering children during treatment and for 3 months after.
